POSITION SUMMARY

The City of Port St. Lucie is an equal opportunity employer.

This position requires the applicant to successfully pass a drug screening.

This position is Essential and is required to report to duty before, during, and immediately after a civil emergency.

Technical work in the reviewing of plans and applications of proposed new buildings and changes to existing buildings for compliance with applicable codes and ordinances. Must possess a plans examiner license or the ability to obtain certification within twelve (12) months of hire.

Facilitates the development of public trust and confidence in the City.

Building Plans Examiner I - $59,186.72
Building Plans Examiner II - $62,146.03
Building Plans Examiner III - $65,253.19
Building Plans Examiner IV- $68,515.84

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Keeps the mission, vision and values of the City of Port St. Lucie at the forefront of decision making and action; builds strategic and collaborative relationships and interacts with others in a way that builds confidence and trust; provides excellent customer service by taking action to accomplish objectives, maintains high levels of work and productivity by generating innovative solutions to work situations.
  • Reviews plans and applications. Coordinates reviews of Fire Marshal, Electrical/Plumbing Inspections, etc.
  • Prepared comments for code deficiencies.
  • Calculates fees.
  • Attends meetings with staff, engineers, architects and contractors.
  • Maintains proficiency with code changes and ordinances.
  • Accesses, inputs and retrieves information from a computer.
  • Answers questions from the public.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

    Knowledge of:
    • Knowledge of principles and practices of building construction.
    • Knowledge of building codes.
      Skills and Ability to:

        Education and/or Experience: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
      • Five (5) years' experience in construction, design or inspections of buildings as supervisor or contractor, and must possess minimum of ONE valid building plans examiner certification or the ability to obtain certification within twelve (12) months of hire.
      • Six (6) years' experience in construction, design or inspections of buildings as supervisor or contractor, and must possess minimum of TWO valid building plans examiner certifications.
      • Seven (7) years' experience in construction, design or inspections of buildings as supervisor or contractor, and must possess minimum of THREE valid building plans examiner certifications.
      • Eight (8) years' experience in construction, design or inspections of buildings as supervisor or contractor, and must possess minimum of FOUR valid plans examiner certifications or the One and Two Dwelling Inspector Certification.
        Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License and maintenance of a clean driving history. Possession and maintenance of State of Florida-mandated licensing Requirements.

        PHYSICAL DEMANDS

        While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions, uneven surfaces and dust and is required to talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk. The employee is occasionally required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, occasionally 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions, uneven surfaces, slippery surfaces and heights of up to 50 feet. Some stressful situations. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
