General Statement of Job
Under frequent supervision, provides effective and skillful
lifeguarding services for the Bob Makinson Aquatic Center, and
assists in maintaining BMAC facilities and pools. Nights & weekends
as required, no set schedule. Reports to the Recreation & Leisure
Services Supervisor - Aquatics and/or Head Lifeguard.
Essential Functions:
Inspects the pool area, grounds, facilities and equipment for
safety and proper condition.
Monitors the activities and behavior of pool guests; ensures
compliance with all safety policies and procedures. Rescues
swimmers in danger, and performs CPR and provides First Aid as
necessary.
Prepares accident/incident reports as required.
Receives and responds to inquiries, concerns and complaints of
citizens regarding BMAC programs and policies.
Operates a variety of pool equipment, including pool vacuums,
pumps, and controller. Uses oxygen tank and various CPR/AED/First
Aid/First Responder equipment. Operates grounds/facility
maintenance equipment, including blowers, hedge trimmers, pressure
washer, edgers, sanders, etc. Uses various hand and power tools.
Exercises care and safety in the use and maintenance of assigned
equipment and tools.
Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such
as the immediate supervisor, co-workers, instructors, guests
(children, parents, adults), school personnel, Ellis & Associate
Personnel, volunteers, and the general public.
Performs general pool and facility maintenance tasks. Cleans the
pool and maintains water quality; conducts chemical/water tests and
system checks; regulates flow of chemicals. Cleans the pool deck,
slides, windows, etc.; removes trash and debris. Performs general
custodial and grounds maintenance tasks as necessary.
Performs general administrative/office duties as required;
including attending meetings, assisting customers, answering the
telephone, entering computer data, copying, and filling documents,
faxing information, etc. Conducts registration for programs or
reservations for the facility as well as collects fees and
maintains records of moneys received; Rec Trac, as needed.
Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Education and Training
Must be at least fifteen (15) years of age. Requires a junior high
school diploma supplemented by a combination of education, training
and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and
abilities. High School graduate preferred. Must possess Lifeguard
Certification and CPR/AED/First Aid certifications. Must possess
and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver's License or Florida
ID. Must possess or obtain the most current FEMA 100, 200, and 700
Incident Command System certifications within 6 months of
appointment to the job.
Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required
Schedule: Hours and schedule varies depending on the time of the
year, not to exceed on average of 28 hours per week. Nights,
weekends and early mornings may be required.
Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate pool
maintenance equipment, hand and power tools, etc. Tasks involve the
ability to exert moderate, though not constant, physical effort,
typically involving some combination of remaining on feet for
extended periods of time, climbing and balancing, stooping,
kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some
lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of objects and materials of
moderate weight (12-20 pounds to moderately heavy weight (up to 50
pounds). Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of
color.
Language Ability: Requires ability to read a variety of policy and
procedure manuals, technical manuals, equipment manual, etc.
Requires the ability to prepare reports, records, etc., with proper
format. Requires the ability to speak with and before others with
poise, voice control and confidence. Requires the ability to record
and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow verbal
and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively
and efficiently with co-workers and guests, and in using chemical
and mechanical terminology. Requires the ability to talk and hear:
(talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words;
hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear). Requires the ability
of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange
information. Includes receiving assignments and/or direction from
supervisor.
Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for
proper length, width and shape, a visually read various
information.
Knowledge of Job: Has through knowledge of the methods, procedures
and policies of the Parks & Recreation Department as they pertain
to the performance of duties of the lifeguard. Is knowledgeable in
the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the
specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Has knowledge
of lifeguarding requirements as set forth by Ellis & Associates. Is
able to work in adverse conditions, including exposure to extreme
heat or cold, wetness, humidity, pollen, disease, machinery
hazards, harmful rays of the sun, noise, toxic agents, water
hazards, etc. Has knowledge of applicable occupational hazards, and
safety precautions. Is able to conduct thorough safety inspections
and to determine and resolve unsafe conditions.
Knows how to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations. Has
the ability to plan, organize, and prioritize daily assignments and
work activities. Has the ability to learn and utilize new skills
and information to improve job performance and efficiency. Is able
to read and interpret various materials pertaining to the
responsibilities of the job.
Is able to prepare simple records and reposts. Is able to perform
requires mathematical calculations with accuracy. Has knowledge of
the terminology used within the department. Knows how to maintain
effective relationships with personnel of other departments,
professionals and members of the public through contact and
cooperation.
